TheMinistryofBusiness,InnovationandEmploymenthascompleteditsannualreviewoftwooftheEssentialSkillsinDemand(ESID)Lists–theLongTermSkillShortageList(LTSSL)andtheImmediateSkillShortageList(ISSL).TheMinistryregularlyreviewstheESIDliststoensurethattheymeetthechangingneedsofthelabourmarket,andtoensureopportunitiesforNewZealandersfirst.

LongTermSkillShortageList

TheLTSSLidentifiesoccupationsthathaveanabsolute(sustainedandongoing)shortageofskilledworkersbothgloballyandthroughoutNewZealand.MigrantswhogainemploymentinoneoftheseoccupationsmaybegrantedaworkvisaundertheLTSSLWorktoResidenceorEssentialSkillsinstructions.MigrantsapplyingforresidenceundertheSkilledMigrantCategorymaygainbonuspointstowardstheirapplicationiftheyhaveanofferofemployment,workexperienceorqualificationsinanareaofabsoluteskillshortageidentifiedontheLTSSL.

TheESIDchangeswilltakeeffecton27February2017.Furtherworkiscurrentlybeingcarriedouttoreviewtherequirementswhichmigrantsneedtosatisfytoapplyforaworkvisaoraresidencevisausingtheskillshortagelists.ThisincludesareviewofqualificationsinassociationwiththeNewZealandQualificationsAuthority,andsomeotherchangestoensurethattherequirementsforusingthelistsareappropriatefortheshortages.
